On this page we will be discussing two bathrooms.
  • The first bathroom was created from scratch in the new living space.
  • It is easy to bring the water to the second floor but the challenge was with the toilet.
  • We need to have a vent pipe no further than 3 to 5 feet from where the toilet is located.
  • The old vent was 10 feet away, meaning that now we had to create another vent.
  • We started from the basement and brought a 3 inch pipe all the way to the roof.
  • We could now attach the toilet and sink to this pipe and eliminate drainage issues.
  • Ceramic tiles were installed, the fan was connected, then we primed and painted the walls.
  • Next came the toilet and sink installation.
  • The following step was to attach the medicine cabinet and light fixture as well as the vanity.
  • Due to the height of the ceiling and the wall width, we decided to use bifold doors for the bathroom and the closet.

  • The bathroom on the main floor was very old and a face lift was required, so we removed the old tub, medicine cabinet, light fixture, pedestal sink and some walls all the way down to the 2 by 4's.
  • One of the main reasons we needed to do this was to bring the water to the second floor and to reorganize the plumbing.
  • The wall that is between this bathroom and the kitchen needed some attention in one corner, due to the vent being located in the wrong place and the two sinks that were attached to it.
  • We upgraded the old cast iron pipe for pvc.
  • We also moved all plumbing connections to the basement.
  • If there ever is a problem with plumbing they will be able to access it from the basement and never have to open a wall to do repairs.
  • It took some extra effort but in the long run it was the best thing to do.
  • We then put the drywall up and closed all the walls. For the shower area we used cement drywall.
  • The exterior wall was already insulated so we did not touch it.
  • Then we added the ceramic tiles which is always a challenge to apply the adhesive.
  • The use of spacers are helpful but sometimes, especially in older homes, the walls are not perfectly straight so you have to compensate with the tiles.
  • You will need to check periodically to readjust the tiles that moved.
  • Sometimes you might have to take one out and start again.
  • You probably noticed in the corner of the wall that we installed two soap dishes.
  • One of the issues we encountered was one of them came loose during the night and fell on the other and broke it.
  • We had to clean that corner and start those two over again.
  • This time they stayed on the wall.
  • The floor of the shower was quite a challenge because there were about 12 adjustable screws underneath it and none of them were in line with the other.
  • We used a 4 foot leveller to finally straighten this piece with the floor and the walls.
  • Before the wall and floor was completed we tested the water to make sure everything worked.
  • It is not a good idea to close everything and find out that there is a leak.
  • Now we were able to do the ceramic tiles on the floor.
  • Then we installed the vanity, medicine cabinet, light fixture and the baseboard.
  • In the bathroom we did some caulking at the base of all baseboards and installed the seat in the shower.

  • Here is a video of the main floor bathroom once it was finished (the only thing missing in this video was the seat).
