As you saw on the video, previously the walls consisted of paneling.
The ceiling was not supported properly and was causing the middle to sag.
There was unused space on either side of the tub.
The sink was very close to the toilet.
There was a window partially in the shower area.
The panelling around the shower was not sealed properly.
There was always water on the floor while the shower was being used due to the paneling not being installed properly.
The plumbing in this room would freeze when the temperature dropped below -25 C.
An overhaul was definitely needed.
We began by taking the wall down and we noticed that the old insulation had settled and created a gap.
This gap was between 6 to 12 inches and had no insulation. That was causing this room to be very cold in the winter.
We removed the window so we could install a proper shower area.
We increased the size of the joist from a 2 by 4 to a 2 by 6.
We now have a good thickness for insulating this room.
The next step was to solidify the floor.
We did this by installing 3/4 inch plywood and adding a sub-floor.
Then we installed the insulation and vapour barrier.
We did not need a permit for plumbing or electrical since we were only renovating and not adding.
Now we were able to add a wall at the head of the tub.
1/2 inch drywall was installed everywhere except around the tub area.
For the tub area we used a blueboard drywall (this drywall forms a strong bond with a skim coat or a built-up plaster finish providing both water and mould resistance).
We did taping and mudding.
Once everything dried we were able to prime and paint the room.
Our next step was to install the heated floor.
We installed the metal edging then the heated wire.
Next we installed the self-levelling concrete over the wire.
Once it was dry we were able to install the ceramic tiles on the floor.
Then we did the ceramic tiles in the shower.
For the ceramic tile on the wall of the shower, I preferred to lay it out on a large surface first to ensure it was done to measurement with no surprises.
I used sanded grout because it will not crack over time especially on the floor.
We now were able to add the thermostat to adjust the temperature for the heated floor.
I made two holes in this room. The first one was just above the baseboard and the next one was on the ceiling.
These were done so the heat can flow into the wall and ceiling so the water lines would not freeze.
Added some shelves, a towel rack and a picture on the wall.
