On this page we will be talking about the kitchen.
  • The kitchen was as old as the bathroom and for obvious reasons needed a complete restoration.
  • We started by removing half of the kitchen counter.
  • Then we redesigned the water vent in the corner.
  • The vent was installed in the kitchen instead of being in the wall between the kitchen and the bathroom.
  • By installing the vent into the wall we now have more room in the kitchen for cabinets, counter space and cupboards.
  • We removed the old cast iron piping and installed 3 inch PVC piping that went from just below the main floor all the way to the roof.
  • To make this even more efficient we installed all the plumbing connections in the basement.
  • The kitchen pee trap was installed under the kitchen floor to allow more room in the cupboard.
  • Same for the bathroom, the pee trap is now under the floor.
  • Also most of the water line shut off valves are now in the basement except for the kitchen and bathroom sink.
  • The shower and dishwasher shut off valves are also located in the basement. Now you can stop the water to these individual locations but still have water through out the rest of the home.
  • Another step was to open the wall beside the fridge.
  • There was a closet that was in the dining room.
  • To make more room in the kitchen, we moved that closet around.
  • We put a wall where the door was and opened the wall from the kitchen.
  • The only issue with this was the floor, which was above the staircase that led to the basement.
  • We had to bring the floor up by 8 inches and that was perfect for this fridge.
  • Since there was no room for a kitchen table we created a peninsula beside the fridge.
  • Using the same material as the countertop, we were able to make this dream a reality.
  • Under this peninsula we added a cupboard.
  • We were able to save the vinyl flooring that their daughter installed years ago.
  • Now we installed the drywall and mud, primed and painted the kitchen.

  • We could not insert the screws to hold both sides of the countertop because there was not enough room to work.
  • So we added some planks under the countertop and then we were able to glue and screw both parts together.
  • We waited 2 days before we lowered the countertop to its final resting position.
  • The electrical outlets needed to be raised a few inches so they would be above the countertop backsplash.
  • We also installed the dishwasher and a microwave that is combined with the stove fan.
  • At he time these pictures taken, the residents were starting to bring back their kitchen accessories.

  • Here you will see the end result of the kitchen, remember that it seems in disorder but they are starting to bring their kitchen accessories.
